Learning to Create ...

Hello, Dear Reader ... (or Dear Writer -- whichever is the case),

Before I launch into my latest writing sermon, please let me make an announcement! All this preaching I have done about sitting down and WRITING has paid off! It has been YEARS since I finished such a volume of work and recently I have submitted a short story and it was accepted for publication last week!! The story is called, "The Longest Season," and you will find it this summer in Alban Lake Publishing's "Outposts of Beyond 2013." The editor, Mr. Lake, will also be publishing my poem, "Cap'n Jones," as a reprint in that same publication.

Then ... THIS week ... I had another poem accepted for publication! It was a vampire poem called, "Forever" and it will be published in "Moonshadow: A Collection of Vampire Poetry." I also submitted a second poem, but I do not know if he will accept that one yet.

Needless to say, I am more motivated than EVER to get some major writing done!!

Okay ... now, on creativity, you have to find what stimulates your muse. What moves you strongly enough to become inspiration? In my last post, I spoke of learning to get into the moment by focusing on silence and calming yourself. Go back and learn how to do that.

Seriously, you have to romance your own creativity. C'mon ... flirt with it. In one writer's workshop I led, I had each participant look at the same photos and create a poem from their impressions. It all begins with words, my dearest fellow scriveners. Go to Google right after you read this and and click "images" and then do a search of places you would like to see OR painters whose work you love. Then, find a picture that you LOVE and study it. Spend at least five minutes just listing words and impressions that come to mind as you look at that image.

Finally, look at the words you chose and weave a short tale from them. Don't be afraid to give yourself over to it. Writing is like painting, sculpting, or acting as a form of artistic expression. You MUST give yourself over to it. Let the creativity take control for a short while. You can always edit later. Remember ... this is an exercise. However, it can possibly be a really productive exercise if you give it some effort.

Now, go create something! And don't be afraid to share it! I wish you luck.

Ya'll consider yourselves hugged!

Good night, my dears.

Over and out,
L.A.
